Twins: Joe Benson

Joe Benson. A couple weeks back, he was claimed off waivers. But did he really deserve to be claimed?
Joe Benson is 25. This means that he still has a chance. He could be a late bloomer. The Texas Rangers, who claimed Benson off of waivers, may have a potential backup, AAA regular, or late-blooming starter. Just so I'm clear, I do NOT think his rise to stardom is probable. But, he was a highly rated prospect, and as soon as he AAA, completely fell off. He skipped AAA and jumped right to the majors, and promptly hit .239 with a .622 OPS. After he was sent down to start this season, he has hit .187 with a .588 OPS. A similar thing has happened with Liam Hendriks, a pitcher who has a career 5.63 ERA in the majors, compared with a 2.99 ERA in the minors.
Everyone remembers what happened with Ortiz, right? The same thing could easily be happening with numerous other players, and I think the blame lies with the coaching staff.
The former hitting coach, Joe Vavra, has taught numerous hitters to hit for contact, discouraging power hitters such as Ortiz. This may be the "Twins' Way", but for pure power hitters, it's a horrible strategy. Even with normal hitters, Vavra has been largely unsuccessful with energizing the offense the past two years. He failed at coaching hitters such as Danny Valencia, who is still in the minors for Boston.
Similarly, Rick Anderson, the only assistant coach to keep his job, has failed to inspire a pitching staff that has been in the bottom half of the league the past three seasons. He has failed to properly coach pitchers such as Kevin Slowey, Francisco Liriano, Jason Marquis, Scott Baker, and, most recently, Mike Pelfrey and Vance Worley.
Vavra may have been sent down, but Anderson needs to go down to AAA as well.
Joe Benson may be a bust regardless, but the actions of Vavra and Anderson have to be considered when thinking about the numerous failures of the Twins team as a whole over the past couple years.

  1. Tom - Interesting little blog you have going on. One piece of advice in regards to your Benson post. It is a little hard to follow (especially for a non-Twins fan). The post wasn't really about Benson but about the "twins way" or the lack of player development maybe? Some pretty good writing in there, but I think you could more clearly lay out your "story". Keep it up though
